Padepokan Silat Tauhid Indonesia (STI) is a martial arts organization deeply rooted in spiritual practices that trace their origins back to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The teachings of STI are said to be derived from an authentic lineage beginning with the Prophet, as detailed in Hadith Tabrani-Baihaqi, and passing through esteemed spiritual figures like Sayyidina Ali, Syekh Abdul Qadir Jaelani, Syekh Ahmad Al Falatil Bauni, eventually reaching Syekh Maulana Makdum Ibrahim—better known as Sunan Bonang.
Sunan Bonang is credited with developing the foundational movements of STI, known as “Jurus Hija’iyah” or the ‘Secret of Quranic Letters,’ around the year 1510 AD. These movements are inspired by the sacred letters of the Quran and form the core spiritual practices of this martial art. Over the centuries, this knowledge has been preserved and passed down through significant figures such as Ki Ageng Tirtayasa (Banten) and Syekh Yusuf (Cirebon), finally coming into the hands of AR Gambang, who became a prominent steward of the tradition.
AR Gambang’s early years were marked by rigorous training under the guidance of his mentor—a process that honed both his physical prowess and spiritual insight. The training was comprehensive, involving physical conditioning as well as spiritual practices like fasting, wirid (recitation of prayers), and dzikir (remembrance of God). His spiritual journey also involved Riyadho, a form of spiritual travel undertaken to seek knowledge from various Ajengans (spiritual teachers), Kiyais (Islamic scholars), and martial arts masters.
During his years of training, AR Gambang was encouraged by his mentor to explore different spiritual teachings and even understand adversarial practices such as black magic. This diverse exploration helped him recognize the unique and authentic nature of Silat Tauhid, confirming it as an original martial art that was not merely derived from existing teachings. This realization led to the formal dissemination of these teachings in the form of dzikir assemblies.
In 1992, with the encouragement of government authorities and community leaders, STI was formally established in Yogyakarta. Since its inception, the organization has experienced significant growth, now boasting over 175,000 students and numerous branches across Indonesia. The heart of STI’s teaching is the integration of physical movements with spiritual intentions, emphasizing the holistic development of individuals.
Teachings and Curriculum of Silat Tauhid
Silat Tauhid’s curriculum is designed around a structured series of levels that represent a progressive mastery of both martial and spiritual practices:
1. Basic Level/Dasar (IQRA’): This introductory phase consists of learning 12 fundamental movements over a period of roughly three days. The focus is on instilling the foundational techniques and spiritual principles that will guide a student’s journey.
2. Intermediate Level/Lanjutan (IMAN): At this stage, students deepen their understanding of Silat Tauhid through an additional 12 movements, typically over the course of a year. Emphasis is placed on enhancing both physical techniques and spiritual resilience.
3. Combined Level/Gabungan (KALAM): During this phase, 15 movements are taught over a span of 1.5 years. This level involves a comprehensive integration of learned techniques with increased spiritual awareness.
4. Pendekar Level (AKBAR): Consisting of one specialized movement taught over a year, this stage focuses on refining martial skills with an emphasis on ethical and moral application.
5. Pendekar I (LANGKAH RASUL): At this level, students learn a single powerful movement over a year, drawing upon lessons inspired by the Prophet’s journey and teachings.
6. Pendekar II (TALI TAUHID): Mastery of another singular movement over a year symbolizes the binding thread of unity in faith and practice.
7. Sujud (IKHLAS/SUFI’IYA): These represent the ultimate stages of spiritual practice within Silat Tauhid. They emphasize complete submission to God, marked by deep spiritual insight and profound internal peace.
The educational philosophy of STI underscores the importance of key virtues such as sincerity, patience, trust in God, and humility. These virtues are deemed crucial for achieving success in both the spiritual exercises and practical applications of Silat Tauhid. Students are encouraged to use their abilities for the betterment of society, regardless of religious or cultural backgrounds, offering healing, protection, and support to all.
The Expansion and Impact of Silat Tauhid
Since its formal establishment, the growth of STI has been remarkable. The organization has achieved widespread reach across Indonesia, with well-attended branches spreading beyond Java. The unique blend of martial arts and spiritual enrichment that STI offers has drawn individuals from diverse backgrounds, leading to a strong and vibrant community committed to the pursuit of peace and unity.
STI’s core mission is the propagation of peace through spiritual and physical discipline, fostering a community dedicated to the principles of justice, brotherhood, and tranquility. Operating independently without affiliation to any political parties, the organization remains focused on spiritual development and humanitarian service, aiming to share its benefits widely and cultivate a peaceful society in line with Islamic values.
The future plans of STI involve further expansion within Indonesia and potentially establishing international branches. This ambition is fuelled by a growing recognition of the value that Silat Tauhid brings both to individuals and communities. By fostering a global presence, STI hopes to spread its message of spiritual discipline and holistic development worldwide, offering its teachings to all who seek them while staying true to its core values and principles.
The inclusive nature of its teachings, combined with an emphasis on spiritual compassion and community service, makes Silat Tauhid a unique martial discipline that resonates with contemporary global aspirations for peace and harmony. The commitment to teaching, regardless of the religious identity of those served, highlights the universal applicability of its principles.
As STI continues to mature and expand, its dedication to fostering an environment of acceptance and personal growth remains unyielded. With sustained efforts, Silat Tauhid Indonesia looks forward to a future where its teachings continue to illuminate paths for spiritual and physical transformation, nurturing individuals who are not only proficient in martial arts but also enriched in spirit and benevolence.
